How does it work?
You don't have to be skilled in art or see yourself as an artist to participate in art therapy. However, being open to various art activities can be beneficial.
Art therapy focuses on the process of creating art as much as the final product. When it comes to the end result there are no right or wrong, nor good or bad pieces. It's all about what happens in the moment and the meaning that art holds for you.
During individual consultations, the art therapist will suggest an art task for you to complete in a setting of your choice, whether that's at home, on the beach, or in a park. You will then bring your artwork to the next session, where the art therapist will guide you in reflecting on it. Together, you'll determine the next steps in your therapy, which may involve more
art-making or implementing behavioral changes.
During group sessions, the art therapist guides participants in selecting a theme to explore. Each individual spends time creating their art within the session. Afterwards, the art therapist encourages members to reflect on and share their experiences and insights.
Expressing what words cannot.
What do I need to bring?
As an individual client, you will likely have filled out a client registration form before your first meeting with the art therapist. This is all that is required at the start.
During the initial consultation, you will discuss your needs and desired outcomes, after which the art therapist will assign you an art task to complete at your own pace. A full explanation of how to complete the task will be given to you, along with mindfulness exercises. You should bring the completed task to your next appointment.
Working on the art task in your own time allows you to take as long as you need, ensuring that your session with the art therapist is focused on uncovering what your artwork has to share with you.
The art therapist will suggest art materials that you may enjoy using for your tasks, and you can choose to purchase supplies that fit your budget and creative preferences.
